Lou Gehrig made his debut on June 15, 1923 as a pinch hitter and from there proved to be one of baseball's greats. He was selected to each of the first seven All-Star games, won the American League's Most Valuable Player award in 1927 and 1936, and was also a Triple Crown winner in 1934, leading the American League in batting average, home runs, and RBIs. On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig addressed the fans at Yankees Stadium to announce his retirement and extend his appreciation to the Yankees and their fans. Gehrig was diagnosed with a disease that slowly deteriorated his iron horse frame. Gehrig would die on June 2, 1941 as a victim to the disease that would later bear his name. The Yankees potent offense led them to their fourth consecutive World Series Championship in 1939.
