With Euro 2020 in full swing, there has been a lot of eye-catching performances already. Some of the best performers are already established as Premier League superstars, however, there are plenty of players plying their trade overseas that are attracting a lot of interest from Premier League clubs keen to bolster their sides before the upcoming 2021-22 season.
With the Premier League still widely considered as the best league in the world, we take a look at some of the best performers at Euro 2020 and identify where they might end up playing following the conclusion of the Euros.
OK, so this one is a bit of a longshot, however, with Mbappe stalling over a new contract with PSG, you can be sure that he would attract a lot of attention from the Premier League should he be made available for transfer. There are only a handful of clubs in the world that could afford the transfer fee, not to mention his salary but you could expect the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool to be in that mix along with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Mbappe is yet to set the tournament on fire, however, as France progress, we can expect a talent like Mbappe to shine on the big stage. He is currently rated as one of the best young players in the world alongside Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.
Another French international, Coman currently plies his trade in Germany with Bayern Munich, however, he has long been linked with Manchester United and in more recent weeks, with Liverpool. He has seen limited action during the group games at Euro 2020, playing only 24 minutes in the opening three games, however, there is no doubting his talent. Coman’s current contract runs until 2023 so this is a potentially make or break summer with his value dropping if no new contract is agreed and he enters the final year of his contract next year.
Bayern could expect a transfer fee of around €70m for the 25-year-old.
Netherlands international Donyell Malen is a transfer target for Liverpool this summer according to reports, and talks between the two parties have been opened. The PSV attacker enjoyed a sparkling season in the Eredivise and has carried that form into Euro 2020. The 22-year-old bagged 27 goals for PSV in the Dutch top-flight last season and Liverpool are not expected to be deterred by a transfer fee of around £34m.
Malen has been compared to Mohammed Salah and adding a new attacker to his lineup may be appealing to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as he will lose both Salah and Saido Mane to the Africa Cup of Nations for part of the 2021-22 season.
One player who is seemingly destined to return to the Premier League next season is Jadon Sancho. Sancho has been courted by Manchester United for the past two transfer windows and it seems like this is finally the season they will get their man. Sancho moved to Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City in 2017 for a fee of £10m and it seems United are willing to play close to the region of £75m to secure his services.
He is another who has yet to set the Euros alight, playing a short cameo in England’s 1-0 defeat of the Czech Republic in their final group game although if England progress beyond the last-16, you can expect Sancho to feature more as the competition goes on.
Another team looking to add to their attacking lineup for next season is Chelsea. Whilst Erling Haaland remains their number one target, it is reported that they have a ‘Plan B’ and that is Spanish international Gerard Moreno. Chelsea already has a strong attacking lineup, however, uncertainty still surrounds Timo Werner after a tricky first season with the Champions League winners.
Moreno has been involved in all of Spain’s group games at Euro 2020 but is yet to open his account. He does have two assists to his name. Moreno was part of the Villareal team that defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final last season, notching 30 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions.
These are just five of the big names that are attracting interest from Premier League clubs in the lead up to the new season. As always, a transfer window following a major championship like Euro 2020 usually involves a lot of activity as players use the ‘shop window’ to secure lucrative deals to move to the Premier League.
One team not linked with any overseas stars so far is Manchester City. Instead, they have their eyes firmly fixed on a player already plying his trade in the Premier League - Tottenham and England captain, Harry Kane. They are expected to test the waters with a bid worth £100m and there is also talk of including players as part of a swap deal, including Raheem Sterling who is having a strong Euro 2020 and Brazilian Gabriel Jesus.
City are already strong favourites to retain the Premier League title in 2021-22. Betway Sports has City at 1.75 to retain the trophy they won in May next season and you feel the addition of Kane would only lower those odds and give the challengers a mountain to climb next season.
