Week 7 NFL: It's Good to Be a Kicker

Game winning kickers were the cool thing to have on your team this Sunday. Three kickers. Three game winning field goals. Morten Anderson, who finished his annual prostate exam right before the game, kicked a 36 yard field goal in OT. In regulation it got bizzare at the end. M.Koenen (the old kicker and now punter) kicked 56 yard field goal was no good. BUT WAIT. A cheap running into the kicker penatly gave them five yards and another chance. This time they bring in Anderson who comes up short on a 52 yarder. Maybe should have left the young one in.

Lawernce Tynes, the Kansas City kicker, had a 48-yard field goal wiped out by an illegal procedure penalty, then came right back to connect on a 53-yarder with 6 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 30-27 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

The golden boot award goes to Matt Bryant of Tampa Bay. After McNabb seemed to bring his team back from a 17-0 deficit to now lead 21-20, they probably weren't even thinking about losing YET on another last second field goal. Surely not even when Bruce Gradkowski got his team to the Philadelphia 44 yard line. If you were playing coach and thought "Throw the Hail Mary" at home then you knew that Matt Bryant sucks at long field goals. He was 0-3 beyond 40 yards this season. So it made perfect sense that he made a 62 yard game winner, the third longest field goal in NFL history. But then that's why you're not coaching and cheering instead.

The life of a kicker says they miss a game winner in the next few weeks.

It's official. The Buzzsaw of Arizona are the worst team in the NFL. After a monumental collapse on Monday Night Football for the world to see, the receipe to make it better was having Oakland on your schedule next. Instead it seems like the Cardinal may not recover the rest of the season from that loss. Oakland gets their first win. Matt Leinart goes from looking like Hall of Fame material (hey..it was against the Bears) to looking like a rookie against a swiss cheese defense. Edgerrin James may be regretting taking more money to come to Arizona where he gained a laughable 34 yards on 13 carries.

It's tough when your team is in a must win to right the ship and silence all those rambling idiots on talk radio. Atlanta made a statement beating the defending Super Bowl champions. Vick, who was frustrated all last week, threw 4 TD's. Cinncinatti had to hear about their team struggles in Tampa Bay all during the bye week. They had a big win against the streaking Panthers. Kansas City got taken behind the back of the barn and beaten with canes last week against Pittsburgh. Yesterday they showed that even red hot San Diego can't stay hot in cold frigid Arrowhead field. I lost some $$ thanks to some of these teams.

Then there are the teams that will have angry fans and the media giving them hell all week. Pittsburgh is now 2-4. Miami was favored by a touchdown to visiting Green Bay in humid south Florida and they still find ways to lose. Detroit Lions? No one pays attention and now even less. How can Jacksonville go from blowing out the Jets 41-0, have a bye week, and then lose on the road to Houston 27-7? Disgusting. Philadelphia has lost two games in a row to last second field goals. Seahawks lose at home to Minnesota.

Lastly, it was a tough week to be a superstar quarterback. I'm so convinced now that Ben Rothelisberger should just avoid football this season. His track record of injuries this season just got longer when he left the game after a helmet to helmet hit. Matt Hasselbeck had his knee twisted early in the second half and left the game. Peyton Manning looked like his head was almost ripped off. He was shaken up, naturally, but drank some Gatorade and text messaged he was okay on his Sprint mobile phone and threw three TD's in the 3rd quarter.
