Vince Young is Running to the NFL

Do you think we'll see a better single game performance on such a big game than Vince Young in the Rose Bowl? If we see a better performance in 2006, then we're in for some great sports.

Now Vince Young has ended speculation and declared for the NFL draft.

Vince is an outstanding college quarterback and would be the leading candidate for the Heisman next season. Does this automatically translate into an NFL quarterback? Not so fast my friend.

The offense he ran in Texas was very simplified. Nothing as complex as the schemes used in the NFL. He took snaps from the shotgun most of the time. He's going to have to transition to going under center. That transition is not an easy one (see Alex Smith). Though he had the nation's highest passer rating, he played secondaries that weren't formidable as any NFL defense he'll see.

But you say he's so fast and can run the ball if he's in trouble? Well he's not going to be able to run around NFL defenses the way he did around USC. Being a mobile quarterback in the NFL is an asset. You still have to solidify yourself as a pocket passer to have success.

Haven't we heard about the future in quarterback that runs faster than anyone else? Oh that's right it's Michael Vick. While he is exciting in the highlight reels, he still hasn't lived up to being "the next great quarterback". Heck, he hasn't even led his team to the playoffs two of the last three years.

However the decision for him to turn pro seems to have some positives also. He's accomplished all that he can as a team player at Texas. He leaves college with a memorable last play as Michael Jordan's clutch shot to win the NCAA basketball championship. He's going to make so much money he'll be able to swim in it. Currently he's projected to go to the Tennessee Titans at #3. Houston has said they will take Reggie Bush #1. New Orleans at #2 will probably take the top rated quarterback Matt Leinart (Note: Can you imagine Leinart in a Saints jersey? Maybe it's just going from the cool hip USC jersey to the drab and plain Saints jersey). Steve McNair has said he wants to stay another year and mentor Young. McNair has already tutored Young for a few years now. An ideal situation for Young. Plus he'd be working with ex-USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Think Chow would like his chance to work with a fresh young quarterback?

So can you imagine the top three picks in the NFL draft will be held by 2006 Rose Bowl participants. All three were also the top Hesiman voter getters also. There's going to be great debate next season and for years to come about those three.
