Prediction: Martinez d. Barker (KO-7)g
Sergio Martinez (47-2-2) is an old school boxer. He just wants to get in the ring and knock someone out. The Argentine master was unwilling to wait for either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather to give him a mega-fight opportunity. He was also unable to get fights with other top fighters including Miguel Cotto,Paul Williams, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
That is because, while Martinez is an amazing boxer, he lacks box office and pay per view appeal. Few top boxers are willing to fight one of the world's best if the money isn't there.
After several rebuffs, Martinez decided to fight undefeated British boxer Darren Barker (23-0). Martinez is at the peak of his boxing career while Barker is still sitting on GO. Considered by many to be the world's best boxer, Martinez knocked out chief middleweight rival Paul Williams in 2010. Barker is a former Gold Medalist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games who owns a European middleweight title.
What he brings to the table in this fight is British television revenue, which could make it a lucrative bout for both sides.
In terms of the fight itself. Well it shouldn't be much of one. Martinez has lost two bouts in a 51 fight career: his controversial decision loss to Paul Williams in 2010 and a year 2000 loss to Antonio Margarito. He has beaten Williams, SergiyDzinziruk, Kelly Pavlik, and Richard Williams.
Martinez is one of the toughest fighters in boxing. He is also a crafty southpaw who will attack Barker from all angles and land punches the Englishman will not even see. Expect an easy victory for Martinez by knockout!
