Rotisserie vs Points Leagues for Fantasy Baseball

Long before there was fantasy baseball, there were rotisserie leagues. If you wanted to play this was your only choice. Over time it got replaced by other types of fantasy. Points leagues are very popular these days and has overtaken rotisserie.

If you love baseball and want to start getting into fantasy, then you are probably looking into the different types that are available. There are no right or wrong answers as to which one is best as they are all subjective. However, some will be more enjoyable based on your own personal set of factors.

When you understand the differences between them then you can decide for yourself. In this article, we will compare rotisserie and points leagues so you can see which one you think you will like better.

Playoffs

The first thing to understand is that in a rotisserie league there are no playoffs. In fact, the season can come to an end fast in a rotisserie league. Let’s say that you are way ahead of the competition in August. Maybe you used some fantastic MLB DFS projections and are killing the other owners.

Well, that’s pretty much the end of the season. Never mind the postseason, the regular season is already over. Some people like this if they are playing multiple leagues so if they are already going to win one then they can focus on the others.

Some people don’t like that type of scenario because it can take a lot of the fun out of it. Since points leagues go week to week, you can turn around a losing streak quickly and position yourself for a berth in the postseason to keep the play alive.

Luck vs skill

Back in the early days, roto leagues were strictly for baseball stats geeks. You couldn’t really be just a fan of the game and play with any chance of success. It is still the same now when playing roto to a certain degree. Thanks to tools and having the internet to research things, you can put together a good season.

However, it takes a lot of skill so you have to be dedicated to win. With points leagues, there is a certain element of luck involved since things go weekly. A last-minute breakout when your week was looking bleak can put you over the top and win that week.

If you love that idea that anything can happen then points league will be exciting for you. If you like to have more control over your destiny and think that skill should rule the day then rotisserie is best.

How much time do you have?

Even though you need to use your research skills to win at rotisserie, there are periods in the season in which you are somewhat hands-off. This is not the case in points leagues where the pace is much faster. You must have time set aside each week to plan so you must account for this. If you are busy then you may want to opt for a roto league.
