Mike Vanderjagt is Still Channeling Ray Finkle

Mike Vanderjagt continued exactly as he ended his 2005 season...by missing clutch field goals. I know it's only preseason but the game was on the line...twice. He's the other big free agent signing in Dallas but everyone seems to forget because there's this one guy that sort of gets all the media attention.

So far it looks like he could be the bigger disappointment of the two. Vanderjagt is nursing sore groin and quadriceps muscle. He didn't kick in the first two preseason games after he scratched himself from game action. Then spent the whole game scratching himself probably. It was uncertain if he would kick in the last preseason game. He should have come down with a stomach flu instead.

The game went into overtime as Bill Parcells decided to kick an extra point in the final seconds of the game instead of go for two which would have decided the game either way. Questionable call by Bill because it is preseason and no need to continue play to risk further injury. But it did provide great embarassment in OT.

In overtime, Vanderjagt had a chance to win the game and look forward to his favorite part of football..showering with the team. Instead he kicked a 33 yard field goal wide right. If that wasn't bad enough for his Cowboys debut, he had one more chance with :02 left in OT. This time it was from 32 yards. This time he probably thought of celebrating by painting his toenails and sipping a martini at home while listening to Clay Aiken. Of course all after showering with the team. Again he pushed the field goal wide right. Game ends in a rare tie.

He signed three-year, $6 million free agent contract in March. Jerry Jones gave Vanderjagt a $2.5 million bonus after relying on cheaper, less-proven legs for years. Parcells has been pubically more pissed at Vanderjagt for being injured the whole training camp. He needed him to prove something on the field. Mike showed you what kind of season it could be with the game on the line and the ball on his foot.
