MGM Resorts International is already known as one of the biggest gaming companies in the world and now they’re moving their business online. Thanks to the Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC), they have earned an online poker license and they’ll get started as soon as possible.
The NGC has handed out a total of 16 poker and operator licenses since May 2012, so MGM won’t be new to the race. They’ll have some catching up to do but they hope that the name of their resort, casino and sportsbook will draw people to their brand.
MGM has already dipped their toe in the water with a Facebook game called myVegas. It’s very common as a number of companies are offering a play-for-free program for bettors on social sites like Facebook and are then hoping to translate that into real traffic and real action once they get a license.
MGM has partnered with Bwin.party for their product and is expected to launch in March of 2013. Bwin.party also needs to get their license before they can get going. However, they won’t be reviewed for it until early next year.
This is good news for online poker players in Nevada and while it’s a step in the right direction, it’s still only in one state. Online betting still happens across the country – especially with poker – but players have to hide and play with offshore options. The idea is that this starts to open the door for more companies to knock on the government’s door and more players to lobby. However, that may take plenty of time before the actual floodgates are opened.
For now, sports bettors and poker players will still have to go to Nevada to get their action in legally. Either that or just stick with the offshore options.
