Soccer is slowly gaining traction over here in the US, after decades of being an afterthought. The Women's National Team have been doing well for years, and the MLS is starting to attract attention from all over the world. Now is as good a time as ever to start becoming a soccer fan.
Understandably, you might be a bit wary of starting your fandom, as you don't really know where to begin. Don't worry, these tips will help you kick-off your love affair with the sport!

Nothing will leave you more embarrassed than saying the wrong thing while watching a soccer match. People will hound you for using the wrong terms or not understanding the rules. In fact, it can get so embarrassing that it stops people from becoming proper fans because they're too scared to say the wrong thing. The video below this is really good at helping you understand the basic rules and some of the main terms in soccer.
In fact, we've already constantly said one term wrong this whole time; it's football, not soccer! European fans will chastise you for saying this, so make sure you use that term if you ever encounter one! For now, we'll keep using soccer, just so it doesn't confuse you.
It's hard to become a fan of a sport when you don't really know much about it. Especially when people are having conversations on Twitter, and you're just reading them like...what on earth is happening here? So, my advice is to become a stat man. This is a term given to people who know all the stats about everything. They tweet stats for people to see, and everyone goes to them for information.
Become someone like this, and you'll immediately brush up on your knowledge and have an excuse to follow more soccer matches. As you can see here, quite a few betting sites have loads of stats for you to view. You don't have to spend any money, you can just use the lives core feature and click on all the stats. This gives you instant knowledge, making you a massive hit amongst soccer fans on social media.
The MLS gets a lot of stick from foreign soccer fans, but it's actually not that bad. There are some great players, and most teams are at a similar level. This means the standard might not be as high as it is in Europe, but you still get competitive games.
My suggestion is to head to a local match at your closest MLS club. Being able to sit in the stadium and watch a live match will certainly help you fall in love with the sport. It could also start a bond with a team, which will keep you watching match after match.
Personally, I think soccer is going to become pretty big in the next few years. The women are still flying the flag on a national scale, and we're starting to see more foreign leagues shown on TV for us to watch. Become a fan now, and you can ride the soccer wave as it gets bigger!
