It is hard to believe, but we are now over halfway through the regular season in this year’s NFL campaign. It is difficult to recap everything that has happened so far, but we have seen dominant performances from the likes of the Arizona Cardinals, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills. We have seen horror show performances from the likes of the Detroit Lions, the New York Jets and Houston Texans. We’ve seen injuries to the likes of Russell Wilson, A. J. Green and Spencer Brown, and we’ve had controversy with the likes of Aaron Rodgers (more on this later), Henry Ruggs III and Jon Gruden. It really has been a frantic opening 8 weeks.
But the action hasn’t stopped, far from it. Game week 9 throws up a number of exciting matchups, as teams either try to continue their good form or look for a way out of a bad patch. Who do we recommend people bet on when they search for free NFL picks? Let’s look at a few of the teams we think you should go for, and equally importantly, who you should avoid this week.
Many people, including Aaron Rodgers himself, thought he might finally move on from Green Bay this summer. However, he stuck around, and after missing the first game (which the Packers lost 38-3 to the New Orleans Saints) he came back and looked in great form, helping the Packers to 6 straight victories. They then faced off against the Cardinals, who had at that point won all 7 of their games. Rodgers and co executed their gameplan almost perfectly and edged a close game 24-21.
What a difference a few days makes, as since Thursday the 28th, Rodgers has gone from zero to hero. He has tested positive for COVID-19, meaning he will miss at least the upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs, if not also the big clash against the Seattle Seahawks. It also appears that he has broken COVID protocols on several occasions, which really is not something you want from your star quarterback. We imagine that the Packers will struggle without him this game week, and all their good work so far could soon unravel very quickly.
After 5 game weeks, things were looking pretty good for the LA Chargers. They had won 4 times and only narrowly losing out to the Dallas Cowboys 20-17. At this stage, they were sitting well in the AFC West, especially as the Chiefs have been struggling, and the Las Vegas Raiders were in disarray following the resignation of their Head coach Jon Gruden.
Unfortunately for Chargers fans, it looks like their form has deserted them at just the wrong moment. They were absolutely hammered by the Baltimore Ravens, with the final score ending up 34-6. Then following that they lost at home to the New England Patriots, in a tight 27-24 game. If they have playoff aspirations, they will need to arrest this slide, and fast. They have a good opportunity this weekend when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles, who have an inferior record (3-5) to the Chargers (4-3). Let’s hope they can turn things around at the Lincoln Financial Field.
If there is one team more than any other out there who desperately could do with a win, it is the Detroit Lions. Their performances have been parts unlucky (19-17 loss to the Ravens) dreadful (34-11 to the Cincinnati Bengals) to downright embarrassing (44-6 against the Eagles). No team wants to go through a season without winning a single game, so Lions fans, Head coach Dan Campbell and General manager Brad Holmes will be desperate for a change in fortunes.
They face the Pittsburgh Steelers in game week 9, a team who come into this game in great form, having won their last 3 fixtures against the Cleveland Browns, the Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. We’d love to say we see the Lions getting something out of this game, but in all honesty, we don’t think it is going to happen.
The Cardinals will be hoping to bounce back from their defeat against the Packers when they travel to the West Coast to face the San Francisco 49ers. Given the 49ers mixed season, we imagine the Cardinals will get back on track here.
Another interesting matchup is the game between the LA Rams and the Tennessee Titans. The Rams have won their last 4 games, as have the Titans. Something will have to give in this game at the SoFi Stadium this Sunday, and if we had to call it one way or the other, we see the Rams winning, in a close game, in front of their home fans.
