We've seen the clip of Jason McElwain, or J-Mac, over and over again on television. It's one of those clips that you just stop to watch again even though you've seen it. It's just like the "Shawshank Redemption" effect. Dammit I've seen that movie so many freakin times but when I'm channel surfing and I see it's on, I'm glued to the movie. If I see J-Mac making JJ Reddick type 3 pointers still, I'm watching.
This is a story that we need more of. Amazing stories like this that make grown sports fanatics even shed a tear.
Now J-Mac is getting movie offers for his story. Tons. Big studios like Disney want to make a story about it. Envision it like "Rudy" but in high school football. As amazing as Jason's story is, it'll be a challenge to make a whole 2 hour movie out of it. To make it good, here are my ideas for Hollywood.
- I don't know his whole story but his life up till the point of the basketball game needs to have alot of ups and down. We have to really feel that Jason has so many things in life going against him. In Titanic, everyone knew the boat sank but the story leading up to it made it the #1 movie of all time.
- It needs a big name. The sad part of Hollywood is that movie studios most of the time won't green light a movie unless a big movie star name is attached to it. It's easier to market and that particular actor/actress has a fan base. People will hear that Denzel Washington is in a movie so it must be good. They'll go see it just on name alone. Not that the role of Jason needs to have a big name, because it'll be hard to do that. I don't think Dakota Fanning, dressed as a boy, will work for it. As amazing as this story is, they'll need a famous name somewhere.
- Have this movie like in five years and most people will have forgotten about it. Then they'll be ready to hear the story again.
- Don't have a sequel no matter what.
Hollywood is desperate for fresh movie ideas. Why do you think you hear they're making Indiana Jones: 4, Die Hard:4, Rocky:6 and any other sequel out there?
If they overspent for movies that bombed including "Stealth" and "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo", then they sure can write a big check to make this movie right.
