Let’s say you’re a NFL general manager. A real general manager and not someone picking for a fantasy football team. You have your choice of having on your team Randy Moss or Terrell Owens. They both are asking for the same amount of money. Both were once the best receivers in the league. Now they seems to be older and more of a headache. They give their respective team public relations nightmares on and off the field. They both have baggage. They command pricey contracts but do not perform anywhere near their worth. Depending on your what you can deal with, this could be an easy or difficult decision.
You’re picking the 2006 version of either player. That means whatever baggage they have you can’t take that back. Randy Moss mooning? Check. Running over a police officer? Check. Terrell Owens destroying the Philadelphia Eagles? Yep. Tried to overdose on drugs? Yep. Let’s quickly take a look at each player’s positives and negatives.
The story of Terrell Owens is well documented. Everything he does, no matter how small, makes sports headlines. He wore out his welcome in San Francisco and Philadelphia. He alienated teammates and coaches. He wanted a new contract after one season into his Eagles’ contract. He speaks his mind and that can be a bad thing. He’ll get in the faces of his quarterbacks and confront them if he’s not happy on the field. He loves the spotlight and pouts if the attention is not on him. He likes to blame everyone else but himself. He gets so much media attention that even Bill Parcells is so tired talking about him. He can be cancer for an organization.
When on the field he can still be a dominant receiver. He blocks well down field. He might get frustrated that he doesn’t get the ball because he knows when he does he can make a difference for his team. He did come back from a broken ankle to play in Super Bowl XXIX and caught 9 balls for 122 yards. He may have learned his lesson from San Francisco and Philadelphia and now wants to unify a locker room and not destroy it. But he’s volatile will always be T.O.
Randy Moss was once so talented many teams felt stupid for passing him in the draft. In August 2005, Moss created a public relations faux pas for himself and the Raiders when he told HBO’s Bryant Gumbel that he has smoked marijuana during his NFL career “once in a blue moon.” He was known to take plays off with the Vikings. Once responding to a reporter about writing a check for a fine Moss said, “When you’re rich, you don’t write checks!” The reporter followed up by asking Moss how he paid the fine. Moss responded, saying “Straight cash, homey. What’s 10 grand to me? Next time I’ll just shake my dick!” Recently he said, “I’m not concerned about football right now. I’m loving life. I don’t see anybody else having a concern, so why should I?” Sounds like he’s playing just for a paycheck.
Now Randy Moss is the best player on the worst team in the league this season. The problem is no one can get him the ball. He’s frustrated that it seems no one on the team cares that they’re losing. He’s been very critical of the team and Art Shell but who wouldn’t? Put him on a better offense and he’ll still produce solid numbers. Winning should give him motivation. He seems to be done getting arrested off the field. But he still does not act like a team player and a leader. He never has and he probably never will.
So who would it be for you?

As a Vikings fan, I’ve still got a soft spot for Moss. Ok, so his effort is not always there when he’s not the focal point of the offense or doesn’t get the ball at all (such as right now). But he’s still enormously talented (as Cris Carter says… “all he does is catch touchdowns”).
Of course, TO is very talented, but he’s crazy. I just have a hard time TO will be able to surive for more than a year or 2 with a team anymore without him driving everyone crazy.
Of course, there is probably reason to be concerned about Moss’ healthy. He’s had a history of back problems and a various other injuries, and that could only get worse as he gets older. But I’ll take a healthy Moss over TO.
Can we choose neither? I mean, I hate TO’s ego, but he is a better all around player than Moss. Like you said, he blocks downfield and seems to give his best.
On the other hand, Moss might be better in the locker room (marginally), but he just doesn’t hustle enough for me.
Given the choice, I’d probably just take a no name in the draft and hope he turns out to be the next Jerry Rice.
You forgot one important deciding factor and that is the team that surrounds them. Moss needs a QB who can throw the deep ball, while T.O. thrived in the west coast offense. I think both need to on teams that are gonna be winners at this point in their career. With that said I would take Moss, because he seems less selfish than Owens. Barely.
Brian you gotta pick on or the other. I know it’s like picking your favorite child but you just have to.
As a Cowboys fan, I like Owens just fine, and he probably fits in better football-wise than Moss would (being more of a posession-type reciever to complement the deep threat of Terry Glenn), but I’d rather have Moss. Of course, by observing them both this season, it really doesn’t batter if you have a crappy QB (Brooks/Walter/Tuiasosopo in Oakland, Bledsoe in Dallas).
Randy Moss would be good on the right team. He has no hope playing in Oakland.
The scary part Adam is that Jacksonville is rumored to be interested in him. I hope not because we’d have to give up probably a #1 pick for him. But it’s probably all talk.
Ok ok, so I take TO. You’ve got to understand where I’m coming from though. I’m a huge Air Force fan and nothing make me happier than a receiver knowing how to block. To me, Moss like a more selfish player. Sure, TO likes a lot of attention, but Moss just gives up when he isn’t getting the ball.
Thanks Brian, you make good points. When TO is on and playing hard, he is an unbelievable force. I just don’t think Moss has that fire in him left anymore.
i’d take moss…TO may jump/OD/pull the trigger at any moment. he’s a loose cannon.
Moss. All the way. He’s never ruined any team he’s been on. He’s done some dumb and dogs it, but if you have a coach with a gameplan and a QB with the arm, he can get you six anytime anywhere.
I have mad sympathy for the kid. Imagine his circumstances and consider if you wouldn’t go a little bonkers and say some dumb shit….
You’re one of the game’s greats. You’ve had some of the most explosive outbursts of productivity in the history of the game. But even you can’t do it alone….
Here are the coaches he’s played under….
Dennis Green.
Mike Tice.
Norv Turner.
Art Shell.
Notice a trend?
Here are some of the QBs he’s played with…..
Randall Cunningham.
Dante Culpepper.
Kerry Collins.
Aaron Brooks.
Andrew Walters.
Marques TwooeyOuchiePoo.
Notice a trend?
How much fire would you have if the prime years of your career were spent in a black hole devoid of leadership, talent and direction?
Moss. Moss is just bored and therefore unmotivated. This is due solely to the fact that he’s on a crappy team. Put him on a team with a decent QB (defined in this case as one that can get the ball to him) that’s got a shot at winning games and he’ll come around and produce.
TO on the other hand is completely insane. What happened with the Eagles proves this. Good team…winning team…a QB capable of getting him the ball. But he couldn’t hold it together because his QB was justifiably critical of him and he decided he wanted a new contract (1 year after signing the original one). He’s an attention whore (situps in the driveway anyone?) that absolutely MUST have conflict in his life.
Put Moss on the Bears, Chiefs, Rams, etc. and you’ll have a happy camper who’ll be ridiculously productive. Put TO on any team and it’s only a matter of time, regardless of that team’s winning/losing, until TO shits himself.
i’d take Moss. at least he doesnt blame every one else and will still make plays. T.O. will drop a pass, then blame his QB or O-coordinator.
