I think I expressed the same reactions when I heard Cory Lidle was killed in a plane crash. Shock, disbelief, and sadness. All I knew before today about Cory Lidle was that he pitched for the Phillies this season and then traded to the Yankees. What I learned was that he played for seven organization, loved flying and gambling, and had a family. His wife and 6 year old son were on a flight already from New York to Los Angeles while Cory was to fly his plane to California making some stops on the way. A priest planned to meet them at LAX to tell them the news. Lidle’s father saw the crash on television but thought his son had already left for California.
He was only 34. It shows how short life can be and we never know when it’s our time. That’s what makes this even more tragic. He was only beginning to really enjoy life and he found a new passion with flying.
Flying a plane is no more dangerous than driving you car. Statistically it’s much safer. It still does not explain how a tragedy like this can happen or why.
