A National Recall for Shaun Alexander Infected by Madden Curse

by Benny on September 25, 2006

Believe in the Madden curse of else your future fantasy teams will suffer. Shaun Alexander is out indefinitely with a broken bone in his left foot and the Madden curse must now be a security threat level raised to red for all potential future candidates. All players who get a call from EA should instruct their agent to drop the phone like they’re holding a hot iron or they will eat their children alive. It’s gotten that bad.

If you read my post a month ago about what to do if you had the chance to draft Shaun, then you didn’t worry about having a ticking time bomb. If you missed it and went ahead and drafted him, then consider this a lesson to be permanently etched in your memory.

He has just 187 yards, an average of 2.9 yards per carry, and two touchdowns through three games. His career average is 4.5 yards per rush. He has gained fewer than 100 yards in each of Seattle’s three games this season, his first such streak in two years. Not worthy of prime space on your roster.

Not only did Shaun have the Madden curse going against him but add the Super Bowl loser curse, losing guard Steve Hutchinson, signing a new gigantic contract in the off season, and filming the Mobile ESPN commercial, in which he slips in his kitchen and John Clayton reports Alexander is questionable for the next game. Even the Shaun’s big broad shoulders couldn’t carry the weight off all that bad luck.

If you still don’t believe it, how can you dismiss what happens to a player who graces the cover? You can’t blame it on bad luck. You had all the resources in front of you to NOT draft him. I know I didn’t and I’m happy with Tomlinson thus far.

Who is the only person that has stared the curse in the face and won? John Madden. If anything his career has flourished. He’s too busy counting his royalty checks to comment on why there is a curse.

Should Shaun Alexander Be Avoided Because of the Madden Curse?

I’ll tell you who has starred the Madden curse right in the eyes and not blinked – Eddie George cover boy of the 2000 edition of Madden.

He had a great year but in the playoff game versus the Baltimore Ravens he bobbled a pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

The following season Eddie had his career low in rushing yards and never eclipsed the 1509 yards he put up in 2001.

So okay he got avoided it as long as he could but it did still come back to bite him later on.
