The Germans Know How to Wok-N-Roll

by Benny on February 14, 2006

Folks, I present to you the Jamaican Wok racing team. I’m not drunk and sniffing glue either. They have a Wok racing team.

Only in Germany where the beer flows freely could they come up with something like this. If there was ever a time when you said to yourself “they must have been FUBAR when they came up with this idea!” this is the perfect time.

The Germans have wok racing. That’s right. It’s the same kitchen item that is used to cook that Chinese take out you had. The Germans have taken it to a new level the Chinese would have never figured out.

To get you caught up on the history of Wok racing, it has been around since 2003. It was developed by German tv host and entertainer Stefan Raab. They use a regulation Olympic bobsled track. There are one man woks or a four team wok. Due to the stupidity of sliding in a track in a wok, the competitors are heavily padded.

Participants are mostly celebrities like pop singers, actors and tv hosts. However the German “speeding sausage” himself Georg Hackl, the five-time Olympic medalist in the luge, is a proud participant. A legend on the luge, he just finished his last Olympic and is looking forward to more important matters.

“You know the world championships in Chinese wok sliding?” Hackl said. “Every year there is a wok sliding championship. I am two-time world champion.”

I get the feeling it’s more important than a gold medal this stage in his career.

Total TV in German broadcasts the event and has an official website for it. Man they’re serious about this. Since German is not my first, second or hundredth language, I have no idea what they are saying. However thanks to pictures it’s somewhat easy to navigate their site.

If you woke up today and thought that it’d be nice if you saw videos of guys riding a wok down a bobsled track, then you need some serious help. But you’re in luck. Also here is a video of a four man wok from the 2005 competition. (You can fast forward the video to skip the German talking, unless you’re into that)

Finally if your boss isn’t around, you can try out wok racing online. Your guess is as good as mine as to what you’re trying to do. I will say that you use the right and left arrows to move.

So when you think curling is a stupid Olympic sport, just think it could be sillier.

When you say Wok-and-Roll, I only think of that great Japanese hair-metal band from the 1980s, Loudness.

I know, I know…I just lost half your audience.

i’ve never fucked around with a wok that way, but i have got loaded and used my cutting board as some sort of speed device.

Cutting board as a speeding device is a great idea. Living in the northwest I’m sure you get many opportunities. Unfortuantely I don’t get to slide down a frozen hill with crazy stuff here.

Adam, I think you lost me too.
