First I had no idea he had a wife. Who knew until today? Secondly, what must be going through the mind of a man who’s wife was just put in jail? Well he goes out the next day and shoots a 69 in the Buick Open. He did two strokes better than Tiger. Tiger just closed on a $40 million house and shoots a 71. Daly’s wife goes to prision and he shoots a 69. Hmm. Who should have had the worse day? Okay…then so then which situation must be worse?
Daly learned that his wife, Sherrie, was being taken to prison to serve a five-month sentence on a federal charge involving a drug ring and an illegal gambling operation. He says…
“It was just out of the clear blue,” Daly said. “It was very tacky on the prosecuting attorney’s part. Usually, you get two or three weeks so we can at least prepare, but he must not have kids. He’s not a very nice guy, anyway.”
Yeah if he just was trying to get my wife to jail, I would think he wasn’t nice either. Usually prosecuting attorney and nice guy aren’t words that go together when you’re related to the convicted defendant. How bout a shout out to not so nice wife for doing illegal things?
No clear details about what sort of drugs she was invovled with or what type of gambling operation. I hope it was for something good like crack or heroin. No wimpy drugs like pots or sniffing white out.
Sherrie Daly and her parents were all indicted in Mississippi. Her parents will be in the slammer but for less time. John had no idea of his wife’s activities. His wife probably didn’t realize John wasn’t as skinny as his picture on Match.com.
Life has been tough for John Daly who’s had to deal with divorces, alcohol rehab twice, suspension from the tour, and pretending to use Trim Spa diet pills.
But he had a better score than the guy who bought a $40 million house in the richest zip code in America. Is spending that much money that distracting? I would only wish to find out one day.

I’m not a huge Rick Reilly fan, but his book where he caddies for a bunch of golfers was pretty good and includes a chapter on Daly. I believe it was at least one wife ago. The man is a fascinating walking contradiction. A huge talent, almost despite himself, on the course, crossed with the mental capacity and self restraint of Homer Simpson/Peter Griffen off it. He does keep things interesting for the golf writers though.
